The Apostle Paul had a very affectionate, complicated, and at times dramatic relationship with his struggling and status-obsessed church plant in Corinth. Pastoring this church brought Paul to the end of himself. 2 Corinthians is one of his most deeply felt and open-hearted letters; one scholar goes so far as to say that, “writing 2 Corinthians must have come near to breaking Paul.” Yet one of the most instructive aspects of this letter is seeing how writing it didn’t ultimately break Paul, in fact just the opposite, it drove him deeper into the sufficiency and strength of Jesus.
