This Is Why I Serve!

By Betsy Luckett

My name is Betsy Luckett and along with Ashley Farmer, I am a VBS co-director this year. I was also co-director last year with Sook Cadwell. My family and I have been attending Redeemer for just over two years.  About six months after we came here, I was asked to co-direct VBS and I immediately thought, “Really? Me? Can I do this?”

I prayed about serving in this big capacity and began to put my doubts aside. Yes, I doubted my abilities, I doubted the time I could give, I doubted that since I was still new at Redeemer that I didn’t know enough people. It wasn’t about if I could do this … it’s about what God is going to do! I often have to remind myself that it’s NOT about me!

BUT GOD reminded me that his power is made perfect in my weakness.

My husband, Justin, and I have a passion for young families, specifically those in our neighborhood. We are very intentional about reaching out to non-believing families whether that’s hosting a monthly Bunco group in our home, hanging with them at the pool or joining a Y Guides troop with a bunch of boys and their Dads. VBS became yet another way for us to love on our neighbors.  It’s a tool we can use to bridge the gap between our church family and our neighbors.  Last year, several neighborhood families walked into the doors of this church and felt loved and cared for. Some have not been inside a church since, but they are already asking me the dates for this year’s VBS.

I told Pastor Dan last summer that I dream of renting a bus to bring kids here for VBS! I just might do that this year!

I serve because these kids are coming here, hearing the Gospel and then going home to tell their parents! This year’s theme is all about JESUS! I mean, can you imagine? They are going to learn about the King of Kings and that He LOVES them and DIED for them! They will hear the Good News that they are FORGIVEN!

So when the doubt creeps in again and I feel overwhelmed, I remind myself that God is in control! He has a plan for VBS, a plan for these children; He is in all the details, and it’s all going to come together. Not by my doing, but for HIS glory!

Serving the church has allowed me to use my gifts to honor the Lord. I have deepened my relationship with him because I know I can’t do anything on my own! I have deepened relationships within this church family. Serving at Redeemer also allows you to get to know fellow church members in a unique way. There’s something so wonderful about serving behind the scenes …. when you’re in the back of the room while 125 children are worshipping our Lord right here in this room. I remember looking over at Rachel Rogers last year and tears are just streaming down our faces.
